History:
As chandran (moon) was very much handsome and legible,
Daksha Prajapathi gave all his 27 daughters (Stars) in marriage to him. Instead
of treating all of them alike, he neglected all the other 26 wives and spent
most of his time with Rohini. Daksha Prajapathi advised Chandran to treat all
his 27 wives equally. But Chandran ignored
him. Daksha Prajapathi got offended and cursed Chandran that he should suffer
from a wasting disease.
Chandran prayed to Lord Siva in Thingalur to save him
from the curse. Saving him God ordered that Chandran should remain in the
temple in Thingalur and should give relief to those, suffering from the ill
effects of Chandran’s adverse placement in their horoscopes and offering
prayers to him. So, such people who are affected by the adverse positions of
Chandran in their horoscopes offer prayers to Lord Kailasanathar, Goddess Sri
Periyanayaki and Chandra Bagavan (moon God), by offering prayers.
About Moon - Planet of the unconscious mind :
Chandra is one of the brightest grahas illuminating the
sky. Indian astrology treats Chandra as a planet. And Physics classifies
Chandra as a satellite. Chandra is the second graha among the Navagrahaas
Sage Atri was ordained by Brahma to construct the
worlds and the Maharishi went into a deep meditation. Divine light emanated
from the eyes of Atri. The Dikpaalakaas could not bear the light and threw it
into the sea. Lord Brahma bestowed masculinity to that light. When the Devas
and Daanavaas churned the sea of milk, Chandra and Lakshmi were born out of the
sea. Thus Chandra is the brother of Lakshmi. He is also described as the left
eye of Lord Vishnu. During the churning of the sea of milk, elixir was
produced. Lord Vishnu, in disguise as Jaganmohini, distributed the elixir among
the gods. Two daanavas by name Rahu and Kethu stealthily joined the gods and
tried to drink the elixir. At that time Chandra hinted to Lord Vishnu about the
cheating of Rahu and Kethu and Lord Vishnu beheaded both with his Sudarshana
Chakram. That is why Rahu and Kethu entertain a grudge on Chandra and trouble
him on some days by eclipsing him.
It is believed that Chandra was born from the intelligence of the almighty.
That is why Chandra is the controller of the mind according to astrology. Human
mental status also  fluctuates
just like the changes that take place in Chandra during the full moon and new
moon fortnights. Chandra is very fair and white in colour. His clothes are
white, his chariot and his horses are also white and he wears a golden crown
and a necklace of pearls. Silver is his favourite metal. It is suggested that
we donate rice to appease him. Somavaara Vratham (Fasting on Mondays),
worshipping of Lord Shiva, adorning pearls on the body, donating rice, white
clothes, silver, white sandal, sugar, oxen, etc., should be done to beseech
Chandra.
About Temple:
Thingal , in Tamil, refers to moon (Chandran). So this
place is called Thingalur. which is situated on the Thiruvaiyaru-Kumbakonam
route. It lies about one-and-a-half km south of Tirupazhanam,which lies 8 km
from Tiruvaiyaru.
It is the greatness of this temple, where Chandran
(Moon) offered worship to Lord Shiva and obtained His blessings, as the Puranas
say. It is believed that if one visits this place and worships the Lord here,
they will be rid of diseases and also it is believed that no one has died of
snakebite in this place.
Features:
The people with Chandra dhosham can get some relief and
sufferings by performing poojas and offering in this place to Lord Siva,
Goddess Periyanayaki and to Chandra Bagavan. In the Tamil month of Panguni
(March - April) on the full moon day (Pournami) , the day before and on the
succeeding day (3 days), the rays of the rising moon fall on Lord Siva
(Kailasanathar). Arathi is shown to God Siva. This rare phenomenon occurs only
in Thingalur and not anywhere else.

Special Poojas:
Poojas performed on full moon days and every mondays are very special in this
temple.
Offerings for Worshipping the God:
Chandra Bagavan whose dress is white and as his grains
were paddy and raw rice. He has to be offered with raw rice pudding mixed with
jaggery, white flowers (White Arali) and white clothing. It is believed that
this pooja will remove obstacles in one’s life.
