| INTRODUCTION |

Aurovillae is an International city which was built and started in !968 by
Mother With an Idea to experiment in an International living. The residents
live in Around 15 different communes and speak 55 different languages. The
purpose of Aurovillae is to realize human uity. It is an exciting project for
understanding the environmental needs for spiritual growth. On completion, It
is expected to accommodate 50,000 residents. Matrimandir the meditation hall is
still Under Construction and is in center of 800 hectares of land of
Aurovillae. It is worth seeing architectural structure.

The site selected covers areas both in puducherry and in Madras States and
provide beautiful panoramic view with the sea on the east and the number of
lakes on west and north, with the center of the town on the high level land.
Architects and Engineers from different countries have volunteered their
service free. Mr.Roger Anger of France is the chief Architect

| MATRIMANDIR |
|
|
Matrimandir is both physical and spiritual center of Aurovillae. In Sanskrit
matrimandir means ‘Temple of Devine Mothers’
Four zone will be spiraling out into the city from the garden around
Matrimandir. The International, Cultural, the Residential and the Industrial
Zone. Each determines the aspect of Community activities. A ring of Forest
called ‘Green Belt’ is sorround the city

The Matrimandir is 100 feet high elliptical sphere resting of four pillers sunk
deep into its foundation. Each piller represents an aspects of Devine Mother:
Wisdom, Strength, Hormony, Perfection. The Matrimandir is sorounded by a
network of 12 garden and a lake. Inside upper the upper portion of matrimandir
is the inner Chamber , a 12 Sided room whose walls are lined with white Italian
Marble. At the center of sphere of pure crystal, 70 Cm in Diameter, illuminated
by sunlight channeled from a opening at the top of the chamber.

FOUNDATION OF AUROVILLAE
|
|
The foundation of Aurovillae was laid on 28th February , 1968, when
in a symbolic act of world collaboration, boys and girls from all over world
and came together and placed a handful soil from their country in a marble urn
shaped like a lotus bud. Aurovillae has been unanimously supported by UNESSCO
aurovillae. Aurovillae was initially established by Sri Arabindo society Under
Presidentship of Presidentship of the Mother.

The dot at the centre represents Unity, the Supreme; the inner circle
represents the creation, the conception of the city; the petals represent the
power of expression, realisation.

| ACTIVITIES |
|
The activities of the inhabitants are diverse and encompass cultural
activities, educational research, health care, village development, technology
and construction, small and medium scale business, afforestation, organic
agriculture, town planning and community services. Auroville in an attempt to
be self-sufficient in its energy needs has a policy of experimenting with and
implementing renewable and non-polluting energy like solar, wind and biogas.

THE AUROVILLAE CHARTER

Auroville belongs to nobody in particular. Auroville belongs to humanity as a
whole. But to live in Auroville one must be the willing servitor of the Divine
Consciousness.
Auroville will be the place of an unending education, of constant progress, and
a youth that never ages.
Auroville wants to be the bridge between the past and the future. Taking
advantage of all discoveries from without and from within, Auroville will
boldly spring towards realizations.
Auroville will be a site of material and spiritual researches for a living
embodiment of an actual Human
